ROAD TO AFC 2015 FINALS

JDT CREATES HISTORY, BECOMING THE FIRST MALAYSIAN TEAM TO REACH THE AFC CUP FINAL

The scheduled 2015 AFC Cup semi-final second-leg match between Johor Darul Ta'zim and Al-Qadsia SC on October 20th will not take place following the suspension of the Kuwait FA by FIFA that prevents its teams from participating in any international tournament. Therefore JDT have been awarded the win by AFC and will progress to the 2015 AFC Cup final to face FC Istiklol on October 31st. Congratulations to JDT for creating history and becoming the first Malaysian team to reach the AFC Cup final. This is a great opportunity for the Southern Tigers team and supporters to witness Johor Darul Ta'zim create history again in their football journey under the patronage of HRH Crown Prince of Johor. Luaskan Kuasamu Johor.

The challenges facing the logistics industry

THE logistics industry in Malaysia should prepare itself for some dramatic changes in the way products are handled, stored and transported when permissible carbon footprints on products traded across borders become mandatory. With various strong global initiatives on sustainability under way, it may not be too long before our exports which do not tally up the right carbon footprints will not be allowed to be traded across borders.
It may not be long before ports may turn away ships that are not green. But, of course, before they do so, ports themselves must turn green hence, the green port.
Products which are not shipped in “green ships” for instance, or handled at a port that is not green compliant, or transported via a truck that is not environment-friendly or stored in a warehouse that does not go green, may be banned in the trade across borders. Malaysia as a heavily trade-reliant economy and 24th leading exporter nation, can ill-afford such disruptions to its trade.
It is not unforeseeable, like the way now all aircraft (regardless of their nationalities) that fail to acquire the Emission Trading Permit to fly in and out of the European Union are banned (from March 2013), that it may not be long before ports may turn away ships that are not green. But, of course, before they do so, ports themselves must turn green hence, the green port .

As the carbon footprints on products receive greater attention, it is inevitable that the whole transportation and logistics chain will come under scrutiny. Products packed in plastics will have higher carbon footprint tally than if packed in recycled cardboards boxes. Similarly, agricultural exports that use chemical fertilisers will receive higher carbon footprint than if grown organically.
The same goes for carbon footprints on garments, fresh or frozen meat, rubber products, electrical and electronic products and so on, and of course the leather shoes that you wear which packs lots of carbon!

The initiatives and developments to ensure sustainability of the logistics industry are unstoppable. Our policy planners need to incorporate greening of the transport and logistics sector because trade is at the core to this. While such initiatives are already adopted, including by the Transport Ministry and other relevant agencies, there is a need to map out a more comprehensive sustainability development policy with a view to not just protecting our environment and, more importantly, to ensure sustainability of our trade which is the nation’s life-line. The policy approach could include fiscal and financial incentives or mechanisms to encourage the adoption of technologies and techniques that contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. It is hoped that the ongoing National Transport Strategy study by The World Bank (to be completed in November 2014) and the Logistics Performance and Trade Facilitation Study (to be completed in June 2014) commissioned by the Economic Planning Unit would also address these concerns.

In this regard I would think the players in the logistics chain have to take their own initiatives to think sustainably and apply sustainability, including forging collaboration and partnerships, like between shipping lines and port terminal operators and other transporters. Other supporters of sustainable future must also be involved in creating sustainability awareness programmes beyond green building, green technology and green belts, not only for the logistics players but for all strata of society.
The higher learning institutions must actively promote this part of sustainability as a requisite for any undergraduate course. In some countries collaborative strategies to cost-effectively reduce CO2 emissions among players in the logistics chain have been adopted successfully. It is time we go the same path to engage in strategies to simultaneously advance environmental, economic and community sustainability.

Malaysian Entrepreneurs: Who Is Dato' Michael Tio?

Dato' Michael Tio is Malaysia's very own 'Superman', a modern socially conscious and humble business magnate.  A new leader for the new transformation era. Dato' Michael Tio Boon Yiaw is no doubt, one of the few young and forward thinking visionary entrepreneurs who comes with a big heart.  A definite rarity in Malaysia today.

A future billionaire?  That's a very likely prediction with the current rapid clip Dato' Michael Tio is expanding his various businesses today!  One of his current goals is to have a public listed billion ringgit logistics company by 2015! Dato' Michael Tio Boon Yiaw is the Managing Director & Group Chief Executive of PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd (PKT).

Dato' Michael Tio's innovative management style is heavily steeped in using social media such as his Facebook in daily work.  Active in social media, his staff is encouraged to have open communication and very much in sync with today's young and modern generation.  If you google 'Dato' Michael Tio' you will notice his Facebook account appearing right at the top of the first page of Google Search!

Popular among staff, friends and customers, businessman Dato' Michael Tio Boon Yiaw is famous with the monikers such as 'DMT' and 'Superman' in the social media realm (DMT is his initials whilst Superman is in reference to Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-Shing).

An ardent believer in motivation and fair play, he generously rewards his top performing staff at least once yearly by taking them to expensive and exotic holidays like a safari in Africa or a cruise on the Alaskan seas! Now, ask yourself, wouldn't you want to work for a boss like that?!

He is no doubt an incredible highly energised man and an advocate for higher performance and know how in the industry, Dato' Michael Tio Boon Yiaw has even embarked on an impressive project on his own to build a logistics based university in Malaysia which has its own Lighthouse!  His passion is teaching, sharing and lecturing to students all year round, giving them his wisdom and secret of success to the young in Malaysia.

Recently nominated in the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, Dato' Michael Tio Boon Yiaw also believes in saving sharks by mulling that fake shark fins soup be used to satisfy tradition wants whilst maintaining the survival of the declining shark population.  Dato' Michael Tio is certainly a personality who embodies the 'Blue Ocean' strategy, and that is in his own words!  A real action hero indeed!

Dato' Michael Tio Boon Yiaw's entrepreneurial traits are displayed when he was an undergraduate student reading Accounting in the University of Hull and later as a post graduate student in International Finance in Reading University in Britain. See You Again

"See You Again"

(feat. Charlie Puth)

[Charlie Puth:]

It's been a long day without you, my friend
And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again
We've come a long way from where we began
Oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you again
When I see you again
(Hey)

[Wiz Khalifa:]
Damn, who knew?
All the planes we flew
Good things we've been through
That I'll be standing right here talking to you
'Bout another path
I know we loved to hit the road and laugh
But something told me that it wouldn't last
Had to switch up
Look at things different, see the bigger picture
Those were the days
Hard work forever pays
Now I see you in a better place (see you in a better place)
Uh
How can we not talk about family when family's all that we got?
Everything I went through you were standing there by my side
And now you gon' be with me for the last ride

[Charlie Puth:]
It's been a long day without you, my friend
And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again (I see you again)
We've come a long way (yeah, we came a long way) from where we began (you know we started)
Oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you again (let me tell you)
When I see you again
(Aah oh, aah oh
Wooooh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Yeah

[Wiz Khalifa:]
First you both go out your way
And the vibe is feeling strong
And what's small turn to a friendship
A friendship turn to a bond
And that bond will never be broken
The love will never get lost (and the love will never get lost)
And when brotherhood come first
Then the line will never be crossed
Established it on our own
When that line had to be drawn
And that line is what we reach
So remember me when I'm gone (remember me when I'm gone)
How can we not talk about family when family's all that we got?
Everything I went through you were standing there by my side
And now you gon' be with me for the last ride

[Charlie Puth:]
So let the light guide your way, yeah
Hold every memory as you go
And every road you take, will always lead you home, home
It's been a long day without you, my friend
And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again
We've come a long way from where we began
Oh, I'll tell you all about it when I see you again
When I see you again
(Aah oh)
(Uh)
(Aah oh)
(Yeah)
(Wooooh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
(Ya, ya)
When I see you again
(Uh)
See you again
(Wooooh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
(Yeah, yeah, uh-huh)
When I see you again
